The Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) is primarily a government-funded research organization in Taiwan specializing in nuclear technology R&D programs. However, In compliance with the current government’s policy of "green island of silicon", INER has also established an environmental and energy technology center for renewable energy fuel cells studies. The focus of Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) research are (1) Surface modification of proton exchange membrane (PEM), i.e. Nafion, to reduce methanol crossover; (2) Novel Pt and Pt-Ru catalysts to improve electrode kinetics; (3) MEA and Stack fabrication processes as well as methanol sensorless control technology for DMFC system integration. The major achievements of DMFC work include (1) DMFC Stacks of 16-cell up to 25-cell with power output of 26-44W at 70℃ in the air mode. (2) 20/25 W DMFC power systems with methanol sensorless control for Notebook.
